Purified Heart Before Romantic Love - Part 3 (The Caution of Wisdom)

The Arrogance of Repeating Solomon’s Experiment

(Part III – The Caution of Wisdom)

Have you heard people speak confidently after they read the story of Solomon? Some conclude quietly within themselves: “Solomon may have failed, but my situation will be different. I can love widely, cross certain boundaries, and still maintain control over my devotion to God.”

In other words, they imagine they can repeat the experiment but avoid the outcome.

But the Scriptures warn against this kind of confidence. In Ecclesiastes—a book traditionally associated with Solomon himself—we read a sobering observation about human history:

“The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.”— Ecclesiastes 1:9

Human nature does not evolve as quickly as human imagination. The patterns of temptation that misdirected hearts thousands of years ago still operate with remarkable familiarity today. If anything, the modern world has multiplied the opportunities for those same temptations.

This is why the example of Solomon should produce humility rather than confidence. Scripture describes Solomon as a man uniquely gifted by God. When he asked the Lord for wisdom, the divine response was extraordinary. In 1 Kings 3:12 God declared:

“Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.

It is difficult to imagine a stronger endorsement of human wisdom. Solomon was not merely intelligent. According to the biblical narrative, his wisdom was unparalleled in human history. Kings sought his counsel. Scholars admired his understanding. Entire nations respected his insight. And yet this same man—so exceptionally gifted—was not able to guard his heart from the slow influence of misdirected love.

The lesson here should be unmistakable. If a man of such extraordinary wisdom could be gradually redirected by compromised affections, then it is deeply unrealistic for ordinary people to assume they can safely walk the same path without consequence.

What overcame a king will rarely spare subjects. History repeatedly confirms this principle. When powerful leaders fall into certain patterns of compromise, the people who imitate those patterns often experience the consequences even more severely. Kings possess resources, influence, and protection that ordinary individuals rarely have. If even they are vulnerable to certain spiritual dangers, then those dangers should be treated with even greater caution by everyone else.

This is why the wisdom of Scripture does not encourage believers to test the boundaries of temptation. It encourages them to avoid those boundaries altogether. The truly wise person does not ask, “How close can I walk to the edge without falling?” Instead, wisdom asks a different question: “Where is the safest path that preserves devotion to God?”

Solomon’s story ultimately teaches us that intelligence, success, and admiration cannot substitute for obedience. The heart remains vulnerable whenever it begins to experiment with desires that God has already warned against.

True wisdom does not repeat dangerous experiments. It learns from them. The call of Scripture, therefore, is not to attempt a more careful version of Solomon’s compromises. The call is to remain within the good boundaries that God Himself has established.

Not more.

Not less.

For within those boundaries lies the quiet protection that preserves the heart from the snares that have undone even the wisest of kings.
