The Spectacular or the Saviour

There is a fundamental spiritual law that governs the human experience: your attention will determine your discovery.

Whatever you look for diligently is exactly what you will find. If what dazzles your gaze is raw power, you will be drawn toward it, and you will eventually uncover it. If your heart pursues high-sounding wisdom and deep intellectual insights, you will find them. If you are entirely captivated by the prophetic or the miraculous, you will undoubtedly find an abundance of it.

But here is where we must apply rigorous biblical discernment. There is an abundance of the miraculous even outside of Christ. When Moses stood before Pharaoh and cast down his rod, the Egyptian magicians also produced signs by their dark arts (Exodus 7:11). The Greeks built an entire civilization upon high-sounding wisdom and philosophical depth. If you seek only power, intellect, or supernatural manifestations, you may find them, but you will not necessarily find God.

The danger of the modern believer is gazing at the spectacular rather than the Saviour. We have become a generation dazzled by the by-products of the Kingdom while neglecting the King.

Yet, God is not hiding. The Scriptures declare His accessibility plainly in Jeremiah 29:13:

"And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart."

What happens when your gaze shifts away from the spectacular and locks onto Jesus Himself? He is the Living Fountain. He is the actual Lion of the tribe of Judah (Revelation 5:5)—for every tribe has its symbol, but He is the living reality. He is the Crucified and the Risen Lord. He is the One who, as the Apostle Paul wrote,

"thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant" (Philippians 2:6-7).

If He is the One who dazzles your gaze, you will surely find Him. And in finding Him, you find the only pursuit that actually satisfies.

There is a profound theological truth we must anchor ourselves to: there is absolutely nothing else in existence you can gaze at for so long without creating a spiritual imbalance, except Jesus. If you hyper-focus on the prophetic, you become spiritually imbalanced. If you gaze entirely at intellectual depth, you risk falling into pride. If you obsess over miracles, you develop a transactional faith. But when you look diligently unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2), you are not met with imbalance. You are met with total transformation.

Life without Jesus is ultimately worthless; all things of true value are found in Him alone. I would rather find Him than anything else this world or the spiritual realm has to offer.

Instead of being dazzled by the prophetic, the miraculous, the depths of human wisdom, or the pursuit of power, let us go to the Living Fountain and be dazzled by Him. I offer you a gift that no wrapping paper in the world can contain:

Take Jesus.
